With the majestic 18km long sandstone of Mount Mulligan as a stunning backdrop, Mount Mulligan Lodge offers laidback luxury in the rugged outback environment of Queensland. Situated on a 28,000-hectare working cattle station, the lodge invites just 20 guests to experience the spirit of the outback through a captivating landscape steeped in indigenous significance dating back 37,000 years.
The expansive property bears the marks of the historic gold and coal rush, as well as the pastoral history of Australia. The area is known for its rich mining heritage, with Mount Mulligan being one of the largest coal mines in the region during the early 1900s. Today, the property operates as a working cattle station, providing a glimpse into the history and culture of the Australian outback.
Getting to Mount Mulligan Lodge is an adventure in itself, with the most popular mode of transportation being a scenic helicopter ride from Cairns. As you soar over the rugged landscape, you'll get a bird's-eye view of the stunning terrain and ancient cultural sites below.
Once you arrive, you'll be greeted by the warm hospitality of the lodge's staff and the stunning natural beauty that surrounds you. From the rugged terrain to the tranquil waters of the Ah Bowers Waterhole, there's no shortage of natural wonders to explore during your stay.
Our journey began with a visit to the Sunset Bar, where we enjoyed a sundowner while watching the sun set over Ngarrabullgan. The Main Lodge offered an unforgettable dining experience that celebrated the best of outback living, with a focus on sustainable, locally-sourced ingredients. The menu changes seasonally, ensuring that every meal is a fresh and exciting culinary adventure.
The next day, we embarked on a thrilling 3-hour ATV tour of the region, taking in the rugged terrain and ancient cultural sites that date back over 37,000 years. After lunch, we spent some time relaxing by the pool, soaking up the sun and washing off the dust from our adventure-packed morning.
In the afternoon, we headed to the Ah Bowers Waterhole for a refreshing tube ride down the river. As the sun set, we gathered around the firepit to enjoy drinks and the warmth of the flames.
The following day, we rose early for a breathtaking sunrise over the Hodgkinson Valley, watching as Mount Mulligan emerged from the shadows to dominate the surrounding landscape. After a hearty breakfast, we embarked on a tour of the Mount Mulligan Old Township, Coal Mine, and Cemetery. The site of Queensland's worst mining disaster in 1921, this ghost town offers a haunting glimpse into the region's past, with the remains of the township still visible today.
