Exploring the Heart of Istanbul: A Tapestry of History and Culture

Returning to Istanbul, a city where the past seamlessly intertwines with the present, was an exciting prospect. My previous visit in 2019 had been a brief two-and-a-half-day stopover after exploring Greece, and I’ve always wanted to come back. This time around, my journey was with the Travel + Leisure Travel Advisory Board, graciously hosted the Ministry of Turkey Tourism Board, Mandarin Oriental Istanbul, Mandarin Oriental Bodrum, Peninsula Istanbul, Pera Palace, Four Seasons Sultanahmet, and Macakizi Bodrum making it all the more special. If you only had a few days in Turkiye, spend it all in Istanbul. The energy and vibrancy of this city is electric.

must-see in istanbul

Galata Tower: A Panoramic Vista of Istanbul

Our Istanbul sojourn kicked off with a captivating stroll through the Galata area, featuring the iconic Galata Tower. Dating back to 1384, this architectural gem ranks among the world's oldest towers and symbolizes both Beyoğlu and Istanbul. Built by Italian immigrants, mainly from Genoa, the tower has evolved into an exhibition space and museum with 360-degree panoramic views of Istanbul at its zenith. But its real charm lies in the breathtaking vistas it offers. Galata, adorned with charming boutiques, cafes, and restaurants, is a vibrant local neighborhood and my personal favorite.

Ayasofya Grand Mosque: A Return to Spiritual Grandeur

The Ayasofya Grand Mosque, once a museum, underwent a profound transformation in 2020, reverting to its mosque status. There are no more skip-the-line tickets, and lines for entry are consistently long, with the second floor now inaccessible. Nevertheless, it remains an awe-inspiring and magnificent structure. Since it's a place of worship, both men and women should dress modestly, in loose-fitting clothing that covers arms and legs—no shorts or sleeveless attire for either gender. Headscarves are required for women. In the Sultanahmet area, a private licensed guide is invaluable for efficiently navigating the major sites.

Basilica Cistern: Beneath the Surface of Istanbul

Below Istanbul's bustling streets lies the extraordinary Basilica Cistern, an Eastern Roman relic. Built in the mid-500s on a former basilica's site, this colossal underground water reservoir boasts over 300 marble columns, creating an atmosphere of serene magnificence. A meticulous 2022 renovation enhanced walkways, mood lighting, and art installations, enriching the visitor experience. For convenience, consider skip-the-line tickets, as the Basilica Cistern is a top Istanbul attraction.

The Blue Mosque: A Timeless Marvel Reborn

The Blue Mosque, also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is an architectural masterpiece in Istanbul. Characterized by grand domes, six minarets, and a stunning interior adorned with intricate blue and white tiles, it is a symbol of the city's rich history and cultural heritage. After undergoing a meticulous renovation from 2015 to April 2023, it reopened to the public, showcasing its timeless beauty and historical significance.

Grand Bazaar: A Treasure Trove of Istanbul

Established in 1461 as part of the Ottoman Empire's grand revitalization plan, this labyrinthine market boasts over 3,500 shops, employing thousands. Here, you'll discover treasures ranging from exquisite jewelry and handmade rugs to antiques, traditional souvenirs, and stylish leather goods. Beyond shopping, wandering through this vibrant bazaar is an experience in itself, providing a glimpse into the city's dynamic spirit. Keep in mind that the Grand Bazaar is open every day except Sundays and the first day of religious holidays. Be aware of shops offering fake luxury designer items, a testament to Turkey's excellent leather craftsmanship. Instead, consider investing in a quality leather jacket from one of the showrooms. The Grand Bazaar's oldest section, housing jewelry and antiques, will transport you back in time.

Turkish Bath Experience: Cultural Rejuvenation

No trip to Turkey is truly complete without the Ottoman tradition of the Hamam experience. I recommend visiting Hurrem Sultan Hamam in Sultanahmet. Here, skilled "Tellaks" (bath masters) perform the world-renowned Turkish bath massage, leaving you utterly relaxed on the "hot marble sweat stone" within the hamam. Separate sections are available for ladies and gentlemen, and reservations are highly recommended to secure your spot in this serene sanctuary.

The Spice Market of Istanbul

The Spice Market is a captivating sensory journey immersing you in a world of exotic aromas and vivid hues. Nestled in the city's heart, this historic market has delighted visitors for centuries. The air is infused with tantalizing scents of cardamom, saffron, and freshly ground coffee. Friendly shopkeepers invite you to sample their offerings, infusing the market with vibrant energy. Expert tip: If you can't make it to the Spice Market, don't worry. Kalustyan’s in NYC offers spices from around the world and ships nationwide, making it my go-to for exotic ingredients.

Exploring Istanbul's Asian Side

If you find yourself with an extra day, why not venture to Istanbul's Asian side and explore the city's unique duality? Cross the iconic Euro-Asian Bridge and ascend to the Grand Camlica Hill, where panoramic views of the European side await. A scenic drive along the Asian shores of the Bosphorus leads to Kanlica Village, where you can savor local delights like "local yogurt" and "apple tea" by the waterfront. Explore the charming village of Kuzguncuk, known for its harmonious coexistence of different religious beliefs, and conclude your journey in Kadikoy, where the historical Kadıkoy Marketplace showcases the city's diverse culinary culture. Istanbul's Asian side offers a blend of tradition and modernity, a journey through culture and cuisine, all against the backdrop of stunning vistas that bridge continents.
